Sustainability at Gate Lodge Woodland Retreat
Sustainability has been considered throughout the development of Gate Lodge Woodland Retreat, from the way our accommodation sits within the woodland to how we manage energy, water and waste.
A low-impact woodland retreat
Our three shepherd’s huts have been designed with a low environmental impact in mind, using efficient heating and lighting, sensors and timers to help reduce unnecessary energy use.
We also provide EV charging and bicycle parking, encourage guests to explore the area on foot, and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout the retreat.

Designed with the woodland in mind
Our shepherd's huts use efficient heating and lighting, with sensors and timers to help reduce unnecessary energy use.
From the orientation of the huts within the trees to the systems that run them, the retreat has been planned to sit lightly in its setting.
EV charging and bicycle parking are available on site, and we encourage guests to explore Emo Court and the surrounding area on foot.
Responsible Water Management
Water and wastewater management have been an important part of the project.
The retreat incorporates rainwater harvesting, together with a carefully designed wastewater treatment system and sand polishing filtration, helping us manage water responsibly and minimise our impact on the surrounding woodland and environment.

Caring for Our Woodland Setting
We have retained the natural character of the site wherever possible, protecting the existing mature trees and incorporating native planting that complements the surrounding woodland.
The restoration and continued use of the original Gate Lodge, together with the sensitively positioned shepherd’s huts, reflects our aim to create visitor accommodation that respects both the heritage and natural setting of Emo Court Demesne.
Thoughtfully Chosen Guest Products
At Gate Lodge Woodland Retreat, we have carefully chosen Faith in Nature for our guest bathroom products.
Their liquid shampoos, conditioners and body washes are made with 99.5% natural-origin ingredients, are vegan, and are Leaping Bunny approved by Cruelty Free International, meaning they are not tested on animals.
To reduce unnecessary packaging and waste, we purchase our bathroom products in large 5-litre containers and use these to refill the smaller reusable dispensers provided in each of our bathrooms.
Rather than continually replacing individual bottles, our approach is simple: refill, reuse and recycle wherever possible.
The bathroom products are provided for guests to enjoy during their stay rather than to take home.
If you particularly enjoy them, a selection of Faith in Nature products is also available to purchase from our gift shop at Emo Court.
It is a small but important part of our commitment to reducing waste and making more environmentally responsible choices throughout Gate Lodge Woodland Retreat.

Supporting More Sustainable Tourism
Gate Lodge Woodland Retreat was developed with support from the Fáilte Ireland EU Just Transition Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme, helping us create a visitor experience that contributes to sustainable and regenerative tourism in Ireland's Midlands.
For us, sustainability is not a single feature or initiative.
It is an ongoing commitment to protecting the landscape, reducing waste, using resources responsibly and supporting our local community, while giving our guests a comfortable and memorable place to stay.
Stay among the trees
Choose a cabin to stay among the trees, or book a private wellness session — and give yourself time to slow down and breathe.
